Collecting glass eels is still an activity run by only a few companies in Europe, mainly French, Spanish and Portuguese ones. These companies are often family-managed, and have been started by the actual owners grand-fathers. Very few « newcomers » have been able to enter this business with success. But the market has changed, and the way of trading too.
THE HANDLING AND TRANSPORT OF GLASS EELS
After the fish have been caught in the various areas of the French coast, they are collected and brought down to the Basque Country. Here they rest one or two days, in order to separate the damaged fish from the strong and healthy ones. Only then, they are ready for sale.
Tank truck transport within Europe. Up to 2.000 kg of glass eels in a single truck, running on pure oxygen, for 36 hours transportation. 12 tanks holding each 2.400 litres of water. Air freight : several types of boxes has been used for this purpose (see below). The result mainly depend on the skill of the packer more than on the type of box used.
Step 2 : once the fish are ready for export, the holding tank is emptied in a sieve, and the water drained.
Step 3 : the fish can either be packed in boxes and shipped by air, or loaded on trucks and driven to the eel farms in Europe.
